Uses of Oxaliplatin - An Anticancer Drug

Oxaliplatin belongs to category of an anticancer drugs. Oxaliplatin is indicated for the treatment of cancers like rectal cancer and colon cancer.


Mechanism of action of Oxaliplatin

As we know that cancerous cells rapidly grow and multiplying themselves. Oxaliplatin interfares with DNA synthesis in cancerous cells that is responsible for cytotoxicity. Due to interruption in DNA sysnthesis, cell will unable to grow and multiply themselves.

Side effects of Oxaliplatin

Oxaliplatin medication have some side effects also like:

Difficulty in breathing, swallowing problem, chest pain, sensation in tongue, jaw locking, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, soreness of mouth, peripheral neuropathy, fatigue, tiredness, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, low blood counts, constipation, headache, liver problems, cough, fever, skin allergies like rashes, redness, swelling of skin, swelling in tongue and lips, black stool, painful micturition etc .

Precautions with Oxaliplatin

While using oxaliplatin some special precautions should be taken to prevent any adverse effect.

If you are going to start oxaliplatin medication, make sure that you are not allergic to the active pharmaceutical ingredients.

If you are pregnant or you are on breast feeding then you have to take some extra precautions, kindly avoid this medication during pregnancy, as it may harm the developing baby. Also avoid the intake of this medication if you are on breast feeding, as oxalplatin get secreted in human milk.
